U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings on Tuesday pushed for the U.S. government to grant temporary legal status to Haitians now illegally in this country.

Hastings, D-Miramar, said that was the most urgent form of aid the United States could provide to the Western Hemisphere’s poorest nation, which is reeling from the impact of devastating tropical storms.

“TPS (Temporary Protected Status) is the least expensive, most immediate form of humanitarian assistance we can provide Haiti,” Hastings said during a congressional hearing in Washington, D.C.

The Bush administration has temporarily halted deportations to Haiti, after mounting pressure from community leaders and activists.
