TORONTO – A group of high profile visitors, including actor Matt Damon, are in Haiti this weekend to highlight the need for humanitarian aid after a series of tropical storms.

Damon, along with musician Wyclef Jean and Canada’s former ambassador to the United States, Frank McKenna, will meet with some of the hundreds of thousands of people who need immediate assistance.

The visit was organized by ONEXONE, a Canadian charity that provides aid to children in need around the world.

In the past three weeks, Haiti has been struck by four hurricanes – Fay, Gustav, Hanna and Ike – leaving more than 800,000 people in need of immediate assistance, an estimated 300,000 of them children.

UNICEF Canada says children and families in Haiti are in urgent need of clean, safe drinking water and sanitation supplies.

Ottawa provided $5 million in humanitarian assistance to Haiti this week.
