The Support Group hosted a gala dinner and dance last Saturday with special guests, Prime Minister Tillman Thomas and Foreign Minister Peter David. Representatives of the Haitian and Cuban communities in Toronto had made a request to NDC Toronto to assist their countries.

At last Saturday’s event, which was attended by some 400 people, patrons donated $1,077 to the Haitian and Cuban causes. NDC Toronto matched the amount dollar for dollar. An anonymous donor, from among the guests, pledged $718 – a third of the total amount of $2,154. A final sum of $2,872 will be divided equally and donated to Haiti and Cuba.

‘We know Grendians have big hearts and they demonstrated it on Saturday in reaching out to help our Haitian and Cuban brothers and sisters,” said Lincoln Toro Depradine, chairman of NDC Toronto.

Depradine also expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister for visiting Toronto to meet nationals in the city. The visit was sponsored and paid for, in large part, by NDC Toronto.

‘The response to the Prime Minister and the Foreign Minister was tremendous at every event,” said Depradine. He was particularly pleased with the turnout at last Saturday’s gala.

One of the features of the event was the auctioning of the pen used by Thomas when he signed his name on July 9 as the Prime Minister of Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. The pen was auctioned for $300.
