Anger Over ‘Adopt a Haiti Child’ Game

0 Comments 27 January 2010

A new web game in which girls as young as seven are creating ‘minxes’ that adopt ‘trophy orphans’ from places such as quake-hit Haiti has been criticised by a parents group.

My Minx – whose users can also give their characters morning-after pills following a night at the pub – ‘sends out all the wrong messages’, said group Parentkind.

‘There are more than enough pressures on children to grow up already. We don’t need any more,’ said spokesman Andy Hibberd.

‘Their parents will not have any idea that they are playing this game and the children will fail to appreciate its irony,’ he added.

My Minx has attracted 20,000 members, some as young as seven, since its launch just before Christmas. There are no age limits and players must top up their virtual cash via £1.50 texts or PayPal.

It was ‘harmless, tongue-in-cheek entertainment’, said Christopher Evans of Blighty Arts, which created the game.
