U.N. Chief Criticizes Pace of Aid to Haiti

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 19 (UPI) — The unevenness of aid reaching post-earthquake Haiti weakens confidence in the United Nations’ ability to deliver relief, the organization’s relief chief said.

A confidential e-mail sent by John Holmes, head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, criticized U.N. managers for failing to adequately oversee the relief effort in Haiti following a devastating earthquake Jan. 12, The Washington Post said. The newspaper obtained a copy of the e-mail.

Palm Beach County cops’ battle against the local Haitian-American gang Top 6 was the subject of an episode of The History Channel’s Gangland series.

The gang, most active in the Lake Worth and Boynton Beach area, attracted major law enforcement attention and media coverage after a series of high-profile attacks in late 2006 and early 2007. Those included a shooting at the Boynton Beach Mall on Christmas Eve 2006 and a triple homicide in Lake Worth in March 2007.

UNICEF Seeks to Keep Kids Out of Haiti Orphanages

The 10 U.S. missionaries who were arrested in Haiti last month for allegedly abducting children no doubt consider themselves Christian martyrs. When a TIME reporter visited the Idaho Baptists recently in their squalid, rusted jail cells in Port-au-Prince and asked about their predicament, their unsurprising, biblical response was, “The Philistines won, the Philistines won.”
