Haitian-American Leaders: Return of Haitians to Homeland ‘Inhumane’

MIAMI — Haitian leaders in Miami say it was “inhumane” to return nearly 80 Haitians to their earthquake-ravaged homeland.

Members of the Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition called on the Obama administration Friday to work with other countries that might be willing to accept Haitians trying to leave by boat.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Ask any of the hundreds of thousands of earthquake victims living outdoors in Haiti’s shattered capital and you’re apt to get the same plea: “Give us a tent.”

Few will get one. Aid agencies and Haitian officials have given up plans to shelter the homeless in tents, even if that means many will likely face hurricane season camped out under flapping sheets of plastic.

DR Lawyer For Americans In Haiti Has No License

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) – An official says the Dominican man giving legal advice to 10 Americans detained in Haiti on child-kidnapping charges has no license to practice law in his home country.

Jorge Puello operates a consulting and law practice in Santo Domingo. He has been spokesman for the American Baptists charged with child kidnapping after they tried to take 33 children out of the country without authorization.
