PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Doctors Without Borders says kidnappers have released two European aid workers snatched off the streets of Port-au-Prince and held for five days.

It is the first reported kidnapping since Haiti suffered a magnitude-7 earthquake with catastrophic damage on Jan. 12. More than 5,000 prisoners fled jails that collapsed or were damaged in the temblor. About 200 have been captured.

The international aid agency refused to identify the kidnap victims or the abductors. Spokesman Michel Peremans said they were seized Friday during the day in Haiti’s Petionville suburb and released Wednesday night. He would not say if a ransom was paid.

Kidnappings for ransom had declined in Haiti after years at epidemic levels.
