VIDEO:Haiti Quake Deaths Were ‘Avoidable’

0 Comments 13 March 2010

Two months after more than 200,000 people died in the Haiti earthquake, there are questions about whether many of the deaths could have been avoided.

A stronger earthquake in Chile killed a fraction of the numbers, and it is thought the quality of construction could have played a major role in each.

But as Haiti is one of the poorest countries in the West, can it afford to ensure the new buildings are more stable than those they are replacing?

Mark Doyle reports from Port-au-Prince.
