On 4 May in New York, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Haiti to the United Nations Leo Merores and his counterpart from Lithuania Dalius Čekuolis signed a joint communiqué to establish diplomatic relations between Haiti and Lithuania. The document was signed on behalf of the governments of the countries.

One of the largest earthquakes in the history of Haiti occurred on 12 January 2010. It claimed over 230 thousand lives. Over 2 million people were left without shelter.

Lithuania’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs allocated 50 thousand Litas (14 500 EUR) aid for Haiti’s earthquake victims support. Non-profit organizations Caritas, Gelbėkit vaikus/Save the Children and the Lithuanian Red Cross Society collected over 650 thousand Litas (188 250 EUR) for Haiti.

Haiti is the 155th country with which Lithuania has established diplomatic relations.
