On 29 June 1950, at the 1950 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, the United States shockingly defeated England 1–0 in a group match. In the thirty-seventh minute, Joe Gaetjens 38′, a Haitian immigrant, dived headlong and scored the sole goal of the match giving U.S.A. a improbable led 1–0 in the first half.
