Haitian economist Camille Chalmers says the “sale will be the enrichment of Viettel”.

On April 29 the Vietnamese telecommunications company Viettel formally acquired 60% of the shares in Haiti’s state-owned phone company, Télécommunications d’Haiti (Haiti Téléco) . Central Bank president Charles Castel said the company, which escaped the privatization process that led to the sell-off of several state enterprises in the 1990s, was constantly in the red and required monthly subsidies from the government. According to Téléco director Michel Presumé, the company had “more than 5,000 employees who weren’t doing anything.” “A lot of them spent more time in the radio stations than in their places of employment,” he added, presumably referring to workers giving interviews about their opposition to the company’s privatization.

With much of its communications infrastructure destroyed by the earthquake in January, some have suggested that Haiti go mobile.

The earthquake that devastated Haiti also destroyed the nation’s wireless network for phones and Internet service. Except for cellphones, the population was largely cut off from communication.

There was no let up in spamming and phishing activities last month even as the entire world watched with sympathy the tragedy in Haiti. To add to the sorrow behind the devastating earthquake on January 12, cybercriminals took advantage of the tragedy to launch spamming and phishing attacks.

We’ve been throwing around a March launch date for the T-Mobile HD2 for a while now. And if this slide, purportedly from an internal T-Mobile presentation, is correct, it seems we’re on the money. It shows the HD2 being released in the US on March 24, along with a slew of other current and future devices. Not much to say other than that, until we see it confirmed by other sources.
Devastated Porto-Au-Prince as seen from 250 miles above the Earth.

In what is perhaps the final frontier for Internet access, Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi shared photos he had taken of Earth from the International Space Station via his Twitter page. In addition to scenic locations and sprawling urban centers, Noguchi’s photos provide some of the first looks of Haiti’s capital, Port-Au-Prince, just weeks after it was devastated by the recent earthquake. Like the first photographs of Earth from space in the 1960s were humbling in their depiction of our planet as a fragile blue marble in the vastness of space, Noguchi’s photos not only remind us of our impact on the environment, but also how far we’ve come technologically.

The HTC HD2 is one of the most beautiful, tragic devices in recent history. We love the HD2 for its gargantuan screen, screaming-fast speed, and lovely design. We pity it because it comes attached to Windows Mobile 6.5, an anchor of an OS. Now PMP Today (via HTC) reports that the HD2 will finally be hitting the United States.

Donations made via text message continue to pour in for Haitians earthquake relief as aftershocks hamper rescue efforts. The Mobile Giving Foundation said more than $30 million had been collected from mobile subscribers since the earthquake struck. Meanwhile, Verizon Wireless said it had transmitted $4.84 million to the American Red Cross relief effort for Haiti and that its customers had pledged at least $7.82 million to the Red Cross relief effort so far. The carrier made an initial $2.98 million advance to the Red Cross on Jan. 15.

No, it most certainly isn’t a tool used in the Ancient Egyptian days to extract brain matter through the nose, no sir. It’s HTC’s official capacitive stylus for the HTC HD2 smartphone, and we’re sure this thing probably won’t be a hit. The super-scary-looking stylus has made itself available at one British retailer for $27.50, or 17 British pounds after a delay. Expensive, you say? Take into consideration that this isn’t simply a plastic stick. The stylus must conduct heat in order for the display to register touch input.

In the midst of these troubling times in Haiti in which thousands are feared death, and thousands more suffering as a result of Tuesday’s earthquake, we find companies assembling to be a part of the recovery efforts. We’ve reported on Google’s one million dollar donation, T-Mobile’s generous free-calling initiative, and now — a company we very frequently talk about — Apple.

We have reported about a couple of big companies who have donated money and their services toward the Haiti Earthquake relief efforts. Just like big companies, individuals across the United States have been helping out the cause by donating money through text messages . Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced today that the donations to Haiti have surpassed $10 million, and still counting.

I just wanted to put a little attaboy in here for Google. The quake in Haiti will of course prompt a humanitarian response, and accurate aerial imagery will help get it to where it needs to be most. Helicopters are probably occupied ferrying passengers and supplies, so I’d imagine few can be spared for reconnaissance; satellite imagery is the best way to go for a snapshot of the area, and Google contracted GeoEye to shoot some shots for just that purpose.

After rumors surfaced on the Web a few months back that a new version of ebook reader Kindle might be on the way, Amazon.com did its best to shoot them down, saying a new Kindle was not coming this year. Well, Boy Genius Report has gotten ahold of some photos that appear to be the Kindle 2, so we’re curious what Amazon has to say now. From the looks of the new device, Amazon has tried to address some of the criticisms of the Kindle, most of which revolve around its somewhat homely design and a few poorly placed buttons. The shape has been modified to make the new Kindle more attractive, but it appears Amazon is sticking with the same off-white color scheme–for better or worse.

The forward-thinking folks at Google have implemented a novel solution to prevent regretful drunken digital correspondence to friends, family, co-workers, and loved ones. Gmail engineer Jon Perlow is introducing Mail Googles, a new feature that will tease the bean before ill-conceived late night and weekend emails can be sent out. Mail Goggles are presently available in the Labs tab on Gmail settings. Once activated, users can select the days and times when they’re most likely to be recreating in a fashion unsuitable for CC’ing the entire office.

Nintendo’s hit DS portable machine will come with a digital camera that will allow players to mix images, scribble on photos and create new faces, the Japanese game maker said Thursday. The Nintendo DSi will go on sale in Japan on Nov. 1 for 18,900 yen ($180), and will be available overseas next year. Dates and other details for overseas plans will be announced later by the company’s regional units later, President Satoru Iwata said. Iwata said the revamped DS is meant to be the first toy camera for children and a tool for network-building and party fun for older people in the company’s ongoing quest to make gaming popular with everyone — not just a niche crowd. One in six Japanese already owns a DS, according to Kyoto-based Nintendo, which also makes Pokemon and Super Mario games. But the goal is to make the DS a must-have for every Japanese, Iwata said.

Step onto the pitch and play professional football your way in FIFA 09. Powered by the third generation of the EA SPORTS football engine, FIFA 09 features more than 250 core gameplay additions and enhancements that deliver the most responsive, intelligent and realistic action ever for the series. Enjoy turning defenders with more controlled dribbling and ball control, snapping off precision shots with improved first-time shooting mechanics and firing beautifully timed passes with greater accuracy, placing the ball exactly where you want it. With new player momentum physics the speed and weight of the player determines everything from the distance of a slide tackle and the power of a header to the severity of player collisions and the height of a player’s jump. Plus, players now behave according to their physical attributes with larger, stronger players dominating collisions, battles for control of the ball, and position in challenges for two player headers.
