Canada is pushing Haitian President René Préval to hold elections as soon as possible.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon says he wants a clear indication from Préval that he is willing to hold presidential elections by the end of the year.

Attending the Flag Day celebrations in the seaside town of Arcahaie, Preval said, “This is the last May 18 I will spend with you as president..” Preval’s announcement today is going to silence critics who had been accusing him of using the destruction as a pretext to stay in office beyond his term that expires on February 7, 2011. Thousands of Haitians had protested against Preval during the last two weeks over his decree to extend his Presidential tenure.

In the Haitian capital’s first major opposition rally since the devastating January 12th earthquake, protesters demanded Monday that President Rene Preval step down.

Angry demonstrators marched several miles from Cite Soleil, the capital’s poorest area, to the destroyed Presidential Palace, calling for the reinstatement of exiled leader Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Many were affiliated with Famni Lavalas, the populist party run by Aristide.

Haiti’s leader on Monday called for an influx of international aid to organize elections this year as the impoverished Caribbean country rebuilds from the January earthquake that devastated the capital.

President Rene Preval made the comments after meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva at the close of a meeting of Caribbean leaders. Preval said aid specific to elections is needed from Brazil and the rest of the international community.
