Shocking Video: Kimbo Slice Loses For The First Ever, In 15 Seconds!

October 6th, 2008

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Asx7KFHE_U&hl=en&fs=1]

SUNRISE, Fla. — Life as a mixed martial artist will never be the same for Seth Petruzelli. What he accomplished last night at BankAtlantic Center will be remembered for many years.

Petruzelli became the first man to defeat Kimbo Slice in a sanctioned bout. A clipping right hand did the trick.

The victory by Petruzelli and the manner in which it occurred, highlighted a card that was coming apart at the seams hours before its start. But what Petruzelli accomplished made this one of the most exciting nights in MMA history.

And to think it almost did not happen.

Minutes before the doors opened and fans started pouring into the arena, Slice’s original opponent, Ken Shamrock, was deemed unfit to fight. He sustained a nasty cut above his left eye during a practice session earlier in the day.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada (CNN) — Former gridiron great O.J. Simpson was found guilty Friday of all 12 counts in the armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers at a Las Vegas, Nevada, casino hotel last year.

The jury reached the verdict 13 years to the day O.J. Simpson was acquitted of two murders.

Simpson, 61, and his co-defendant Clarence “C.J.” Stewart, 54, were charged with a dozen offenses stemming from the alleged sports memorabilia heist. Stewart was also found guilty of the same charges as Simpson.

Simpson sat quietly and showed little emotion at the defense table as courtroom clerk Sandra Jeter read the verdicts.

After the verdicts were read, deputies immediately handcuffed Simpson and led him out of the courtroom.

Now 61, Simpson faces the possibility of spending the rest of his life in prison for these convictions. Judge Jackie Glass set sentencing for December 5.

Simpson arrived at the Clark County Justice Center at around 10:50 p.m. (1:50 a.m. Saturday ET). Simpson told CNN’s Ted Rowlands on the phone before the verdict was read that he was “apprehensive.”

The jury of nine men and three women, none of them African-American, began deliberations Friday after hearing from 22 witnesses over 12 days of testimony. Chief among the witnesses were seven of the nine people inside Room 1203 of the Palace Station Hotel and Casino for the September 13, 2007 confrontation.

October 3rd, 2008

STUTTGART, Germany — Serena Williams’ game collapsed after she swept the first set Wednesday, leading to a 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 loss to China’s Li Na that will cost her the No. 1 ranking.

Serena Williams will lose her No. 1 spot to Jelena Jankovic when the rankings are released Monday.

Serena Williams will lose her No. 1 spot to Jelena Jankovic when the rankings are released Monday.

By dropping the second-round match at the Porsche Grand Prix, Williams will be overtaken by Jelena Jankovic in Monday’s new rankings, the WTA said. Williams gained the top spot when she beat Jankovic in the U.S. Open final three weeks ago for her ninth Grand Slam title.

Jankovic plays her first match in the tournament Thursday against Alona Bondarenko of Ukraine.

“Obviously, I want to be No. 1 but I am not focusing on that. I am focusing on winning titles and that goes hand in hand [with getting No. 1],” Williams said.

“I am not worried. It will come again if I win tournaments. I play to win titles and Grand Slams, although obviously the No. 1 is also on my mind,” she said.

Williams was playing her first match since the U.S. Open, getting a first-round bye in Stuttgart. She rolled through the first set and appeared headed for a resounding victory.

“I started making a lot of errors and I just gave it to her,” she said. “Maybe I started doubting myself.”

Li, ranked No. 30, said she was so nervous at the start of the match her hands were cold.

September 28th, 2008

By Mark Vester

At the Staples Center in Carson, California, WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto (23-0, 19 KOS) won a twelve-round unanimous decision over veteran Steve Forbes (33-7, 9 KOS). The scores were 118-109, 118-109, and 116-111.

The first round was an exhibition of boxing skills. Both men let their hands go at the end of the first and did land some decent shots. Forbes began to use his own speed and was landing some hard crisp shots in the second, Berto began to fight back in the final minute and Forbes would then battle back near the bell. Berto would re-establish himself in the fight when he began to back Forbes up in the third with some hard punches. They stood close and traded combinations in the fourth, Berto getting the better of the exchanges.

Berto put on a display of speed and power in the sixth, Forbes began to put in more work to the body. Berto continued to press the action hard in the seventh, pushing Forbes back, but the veteran still kept exchanging. Berto vs Rodriguez 06/21/2008

LOS ANGELES, USA (AFP): Andre Berto, flying under the radar in the welterweight division despite his World Boxing Council belt, hopes to raise his profile with his first title defence against Steve Forbes on Saturday.

Berto, a Florida-based Haitian-American who captured the title vacated by Floyd Mayweather Jr with a seventh-round technical knockout of Miguel Angel Rodriguez in June, brings an undefeated record of 22-0, with 19 knockouts, to the fight at the Home Depot Center in the Los Angeles suburb of Carson.

Even so, World Boxing Association champ Antonio Margarito of Mexico, International Boxing Federation champ Joshua Clottey and former champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico still draw more attention in the division.

The title fight is co-feature on the Home Depot card with Shane Mosley’s non-title super welterweight bout against Nicaragua’s Ricardo Mayorga.

“I’m just glad to be in the position I’m in now,” Berto said this week. “I watched Mosley and Mayorga on TV growing up. “I saw them win their first titles when I was an amateur. Now I’m up at the podium with them.”

Armstrong Comes Back To Compete In Tour De France

September 26th, 2008

By RACHEL COHEN

NEW YORK (AP) — Lance Armstrong is chasing an eighth Tour de France title and an elusive feat: persuading everyone he’s clean.

As Armstrong reunites with his close friend and Astana team director Johan Bruyneel, the man behind his yellow jerseys, he’s also adding a new member to his support group. Anti-doping expert Don Catlin has been hired to test Armstrong anytime, anywhere — and to post the results online for the world to see.

“I think it’s the first time an athlete can actually be totally validated on the chance he’s successful,” Armstrong said Wednesday. “In my opinion, Don Catlin is beyond reproach.”

Armstrong revealed details of his comeback two weeks after saying he would end a three-year retirement. He’ll ride for Astana and will compete in the Tour Down Under in Adelaide, Australia, in January.

The setting was the Clinton Global Initiative, the annual meeting of former President Bill Clinton’s foundation. Armstrong held a news conference to talk cycling after announcing a new worldwide campaign to fight cancer before an audience of political and corporate leaders.
