Mother Made Laraque’s Choice

Georges Laraque – Haitian NHL Player

EDMONTON – Daryl Katz so wanted Georges Laraque here as the Edmonton Oilers’ nightly beat cop, the new owner offered the big guy a four-year contract — one more year than the Montreal Canadiens were pitching the right winger.

Laraque still took the Habs’ $4.5-million offer — mainly because his mother in Montreal wanted to see him play games in the flesh, not on TV.

Laraque parted ways with the Oilers in 2006, signing in Phoenix. He was dealt to Pittsburgh in 2007. In Laraque’s latter days here, Oilers coach Craig MacTavish didn’t feel he needed a slugger in his lineup every night. When he did suit up, Laraque’s minutes dropped.

Demonstrating a variety of trick shots, David Kalb (center) won two straight games of H-O-R-S-E against LeBron James.

LeBron James could be excused for his poor shooting from behind the arc, and for being blown out in a game of H-O-R-S-E with a warehouse worker in a beach exhibition. James was still floating in the clouds from his Olympic experience.

“I still haven’t (come down). It’s an unbelievable experience to go out there and represent your country the way we were able to do it, showcasing our talent to the world, playing the game that we love to play,” James said Wednesday. “It was really fun that we were able to bring home our game, that’s the game of basketball.

“I guaranteed the gold medal would be back in the United States of America. You hate the fact that it’s over. You’re never going to have that team again, as powerful as we were, we’re never going to have that team again.”

By Georgia East
CORAL SPRINGS – He was taunted and teased growing up in Haiti, in part because Adler Volmar wasn’t Haitian enough.

Born in Miami and raised in Cap Haitien, the other boys made fun of his Haitian Creole, which sounded different with an American lilt.

At 13, a group of classmates attacked Volmar with a knife, leaving him with a deep gash in his forehead.

His mother said enough was enough. She signed him up for judo.

“My mom told him, ‘You’re going to learn to defend yourself,’” said his sister Samantha Volmar, who saw her brother make a transformation. “It was in his blood, in his veins. He was just waiting for it.”

SPORTS:What if Haitian Athletes Defected in China?

No Comments 02 September 2008

Ten Haitians or persons competing under the Haitian flag are competing in the Beijing Olympics which started on Friday August 8. However one would be hard pressed to find them on the official Olympics Committee site. The site is poorly structured and it does not seem to allow a search for individual athletes by just using the country for which they are competing as the keyword search term.
