Administration officials say agreement near to cancel Haiti’s $477M debt to IADB
The Obama administration says it is near an agreement with other nations to cancel the $447 million that Haiti owes to the Inter-American Development Bank.
UNITED NATIONS — Former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, who are spearheading U.S. fundraising for Haiti, will make their first joint visit to the Caribbean nation on Monday to assess the nation’s earthquake recovery needs.
The Jan. 12 quake killed an estimated 230,000 people and left 1.3 million homeless, according to Haiti government figures.
“Since I have been honored to be the Secretary of State, nothing has made me prouder than your response to this catastrophe,” said Clinton.
So why did the Obama administration ask the U.S. flag be taken down in Haiti?
“We are not here as an occupation force, but as an international partner committed to supporting the government of Haiti on the road to recovery,” the U.S. government’s Haiti Joint Information Center said in response to a query about the flag.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (BP)–Laura Silsby, the last of 10 Baptist missions volunteers detained in Haiti on suspicion of kidnapping, now faces a new charge.
Silsby, who led the team, now is accused of attempting to take 40 children out of Haiti without proper paperwork on Jan. 26, three days before the 10-member team was prevented from crossing the border into the Dominican Republic with 33 children.

WASHINGTON — Four American nationals have been murdered in the Haitian capital since the January 12 quake, the United States said Monday, stepping up its travel warning after a high-profile kidnapping.

MIAMI — E-mails obtained by The Associated Press show that Florida and the federal government squabbled over where to send injured earthquake survivors while a humanitarian crisis unfolded in Haiti.
Hundreds of injured survivors of the Jan. 12 earthquake were brought to Florida hospitals. State officials say they were not getting enough notice or basic information about some of the patients.
