Parents Take Back Kids They Gave to Missionaries

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — Joyful parents on Wednesday recovered the children that they gave to American missionaries about six weeks ago.

Haitian Judge Weighs New Charge For Silsby

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (BP)–Laura Silsby, the last of 10 Baptist missions volunteers detained in Haiti on suspicion of kidnapping, now faces a new charge.

Silsby, who led the team, now is accused of attempting to take 40 children out of Haiti without proper paperwork on Jan. 26, three days before the 10-member team was prevented from crossing the border into the Dominican Republic with 33 children.

US Warns of Haiti Murder, Kidnap Threat

WASHINGTON — Four American nationals have been murdered in the Haitian capital since the January 12 quake, the United States said Monday, stepping up its travel warning after a high-profile kidnapping.

Updating its advice to travelers after it emerged last week that kidnappers had abducted and later freed two European aid workers, the State Department added a special section on crime-related threats.

US Missionary Detained in Haiti Returns to Idaho

BOISE, Idaho — A U.S. missionary released from a Haiti jail last week has returned to her home in Idaho.

Twenty-four-year-old Charisa Coulter arrived at the Boise Airport Saturday night where her father, several other Idaho missionaries who had been detained, and dozens of others welcomed her by singing “Amazing Grace.”

Released Aid Workers in Haiti Are Czech, Belgian

PRAGUE — An official says two European aid workers kidnapped in Haiti and later released were from the Czech Republic and Belgium.

Lucia Duricova of the Czech office of Doctors Without Borders confirmed the nationalities Friday. She said the two women are fine but declined to give any further details.

Nine of the 10 Christian missionaries that were detained in Haiti after they illegally tried to take 33 Haitian children across the border – following January’s devastating earthquake – have been freed and are now back at home in the US.

They were released after some parents of the Haitian children came forward to the court admitting that they willingly gave away their children to the US missionary group in hopes of providing them “a better life”.

Haitian Kidnappers Release 2 European Aid Workers

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HaitiDoctors Without Borders says kidnappers have released two European aid workers snatched off the streets of Port-au-Prince and held for five days.

It is the first reported kidnapping since Haiti suffered a magnitude-7 earthquake with catastrophic damage on Jan. 12. More than 5,000 prisoners fled jails that collapsed or were damaged in the temblor. About 200 have been captured.

One American Kidnapper to be Released from Haiti Jail

Leader of the group, Laura Silsby, to remain in jail
Reuters is reporting Friday that Judge Bernard Saint-Vil has signed an order to free one of two Americans who has been detained in a Port-au-Prince jail since Jan. 29, but she probably won’t be returning home until next week.

Laura Silsby, 40, and Charisa Coulter, 24, both of Idaho, were part of a group of 10 who tried to bus 33 children from Haiti to the Dominican Republic. They were arrested at the border on kidnapping charges.
