Venezuela Pledges $100 Million in Aid For Haiti

CARACAS – President Hugo Chavez Friday announced Venezuela would donate 100 million dollars to help Haiti rebuild itself from last month’s devastating earthquake.

“We’ve approved $100 million for Haiti,” Chavez said in a televised speech.

Ilia Alsene is a Haitian merchant who supports herself by selling food, water and other tidbits on the side of the road near Champ des Mars Plaza in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The life of a street merchant in Haiti is difficult by any measure.Obtaining supplies can be a challenge, which is why the women’s (and men’s) rickety tables often will sport just a few items: a handful of bags of peanuts, three bottles of soda, some purified water encased in plastic bags.

Two months after more than 200,000 people died in the Haiti earthquake, there are questions about whether many of the deaths could have been avoided.

A stronger earthquake in Chile killed a fraction of the numbers, and it is thought the quality of construction could have played a major role in each.

VIDEO:Haiti ‘Orphans’ Kept From Birth Parents

Nine of the 10 Christian missionaries that were detained in Haiti after they illegally tried to take 33 Haitian children across the border – following January’s devastating earthquake – have been freed and are now back at home in the US.

They were released after some parents of the Haitian children came forward to the court admitting that they willingly gave away their children to the US missionary group in hopes of providing them “a better life”.

Haiti Asks US For $15bn Aid Package
